- Bayview Avenue
Bayview Avenue is a major north-south route in
Toronto ,Ontario , Canada. The southern end of Bayview Avenue starts at River Street (under Queen Street East) near the city’s
Lake Ontario waterfront. It runs north pastSteeles Avenue , Toronto’s northern city limit, and continues through the suburbs of Toronto. The Toronto communities that the road passes through are considered to be among the most expensive residential real estate in Toronto and among the most prestigious neighbourhoods in all of Canada. These areas include the intersections at Post Road,
Lawrence Avenue , andSteeles Avenue .Bayview Avenue is also home to major places of worship of almost every major religious tradition including
synagogue s, anIslam icmosque , the city’s largest evangelical churches, Canada’s largest Buddhist Temple, Toronto’s largestEastern Orthodox cathedral, and Canada’s only Zoroastrian Temple. These can be found, surprisingly, all within a fifteen-kilometre section of the road.Following
World War II , Bayview was extended south from Moore Avenue inLeaside to Front Street via the parallel to the route of theDon Valley Parkway . This addition is frequently referred to as the Bayview Extension. South ofBloor Street , Bayview runs alongside theCanadian National Railway tracks in the Don Valley. This part of Bayview, though only four lanes wide, and at its southernmost tip only two lanes wide, is nevertheless a very quick route from the downtown to the suburbs due to the absence of residences and businesses along the route and the lack of cross-streets.Prior to the 1964 extension of the Don Valley Parkway south from Bloor to the
Gardiner Expressway , the Bayview Extension was the fastest north-south route fromNorth York to downtown Toronto. The Bayview Extension remains a popular alternate route to the Don Valley Parkway.Attractions along Bayview Avenue
