Seligman is a city in Sugar Creek Township, Barry County, Missouri, United States. The population was 877 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Joseph Seligman, a prominent 19th Century businessman.

Geography

Seligman is located at coor dms|36|31|22|N|93|56|18|W|city (36.522769, -93.938227)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 877 people, 317 households, and 222 families residing in the city. The population density was 727.0 people per square mile (279.8/km²). There were 377 housing units at an average density of 312.5/sq mi (120.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.85% White, 2.96% Native American, 0.46% Pacific Islander, 3.88% from other races, and 2.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.61% of the population.

There were 317 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 22.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the city the population was spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 101.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,313, and the median income for a family was $30,417. Males had a median income of $23,563 versus $18,611 for females. The per capita income for the city was $10,918. About 18.9% of families and 26.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 32.2% of those under age 18 and 27.1% of those age 65 or over.
