The town is located convert|147|km|mi|0|lk=on west of the state capital,Brisbane At the 2006 census, Hampton and the surrounding area had a population of 477.Census 2006 AUS|id=SSC36209 |name=Hampton (Crows Nest Shire)|accessdate=2007-11-26|quick=on] Situated at the top of an escarpment on theGreat Dividing Range , Hampton is one of the small hamlets located along theNew England Highway between Toowoomba, (29 kilometres away) and Crows Nest (12 kilometres).Hampton is known for the antique shop and gift stores as well as local produce, including citrus and
avocado s grown on the many farms located around the district. Of notable interest is the largecuckoo clock shop on the New England Highway in nearby Cabarlah.The Hampton Information Centre is located on the New England Highway at the junction of the Esk highway where you can drive on to
Ravensbourne National Park or towards Esk or Crows Nest.Ravensbourne National Park features short bushwalking tracks, a scenic lookout and picnic facilities. In May the park surrounding the Visitor Information Center plays host to the Hampton High Country Food and Art Festival. The festival gives local producers from all over the Darling Downs a chance to showcase their produce.
Hampton has moderate summer temperatures with high temperatures around convert|27|°C|°F|1. The summer low temperature is around convert|16|°C|°F|1. Hampton also has mild winters with temperature highs close to convert|17|°C|°F|1, and low temperatures around convert|6|°C|°F|1. The local flora and fauna are abundant to include many species of birds and mammals. Eucalypt and pine forests as well as grass land are present in this area.
There are three local dams that supply water to the surrounding area, all within a twenty minute drive of Hampton. Water sports are available on some of the dams, but not all.
