2×2 was the first commercial TV channel in the Soviet Union, beginning on September 27th, 1990 [ [http://www.politika.su/media/trk.html#2x2 History Factsheet] (ru)] , with half-hour advertisement blocks, music clips and animations, but by 1993 the channel began to show news programs.

In 1993 administration of channel signed a contract with MTV Europe channel to translate some programs. There was a peak of popularity in 1994-1995, but the channel was closed down in 1997. The 2×2 returned to the airwaves in November 11, 2002. Much of the content is American- or Canadian-produced and there are old Soviet animations. From April 1th, 2007 to present, channel is airing only animated series, mainly adult ones.

Censorship claims

At the beginning of September 2008 the Russian government announced that it would close the channel to make way for a government run channel promoting patriotism. Critics have denounced this as government censorship similar to the takeover of NTV in 2001.
