Nigel Pivaro (born 11 December 1959) is an English journalist who as an actor was best known for playing Terry Duckworth, the son of Vera and Jack Duckworth in Coronation Street.

Career

Pivaro was born in Manchester, England. After attending RADA, Pivaro made his acting debut in "Short of Mutiny" at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, Stratford, London in February 1983.

Later in August of that year he won the part of Terry Duckworth in the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street. Nigel left the soap in 1987, after 4 years of playing the role and returned in 1992 making many re-appearances throughout the 1990s and early 2000s with his stints lasting a week, month or a few months. His last appearance in the series was on January 28, 2008 when his character attended the funeral of his mother Vera. Apart from Coronation Street Pivaro made a guest appearance in the television series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and Expert Witness. He appeared in "The Sunny side of the Street"' for Channel Four and also made a cameo appearance in the British film 24 Hour Party People'

He has acted in theatre productions in his time away from Coronation Street including Wuthering Heights, What the Butler Saw, A Taste of Honey, The Tempest, Greek, Funny Peculiar, A View from the Bridge and Up and Under, his most recent tour was alongside fellow soap actor John Altman, (Nick Cotton in EastEnders), in the John Godber stage play Bouncersin 2003. In 1987, he won Edinburgh Festival Fringe 1st with the play "No Further Cause for Concern".

In 2006 he became a journalist after a spell working for the Manchester Evening News went to work for the Tameside Reporter, based in Stalybridge, Tameside. He now works as a free lance journalist contributing regularly to the UK Daily Star Sunday and Daily Star newspaper. At the Daily Star he shared a desk with former News of the World Royal Editor, Clive Goodman. He has also been published in the Daily Mirror and Daily Express newspapers. He has also written and presented documentary films for the BBC 'Inside Out' series. "Regeneration Game"(broadcast September 2007) a film which challenged the Government backed Housing Market Renewal programme criticising its treatment of residents who were forced out of their neighbourhoods to make way for more affluent people, was recently short listed for a Royal Television Society award in the best Current Affairs programme category. Most recently Pivaro wrote and presented "The Battle for St. Michael's", for BBC 'Inside Out' broadcast in October 2009. On December 9, 2008, along side Editor Stephen Kingston he collected an award from the Plain English Society on Behalf of "The Salford Star" a magazine to which he contributes, following the magazine being voted "Best Regional Newspaper". In January 2010 Pivaro appeared alongside Kingston on BBC Newsnight in a film on the effects of Regeneration in Salford.

In October 2010 Pivaro was invited to present a lecture at the University of Wolverhampton on his experiences while reporting on regeneration. The lecture was subsequently published in the academic magazine Inder Science. In July he participated in a special Radio 4 Today programme with Evan Davis where he represented a lone voice critical of the Media City development at Salford Quays calling it a 'Cathedral of Corporatism' with few opportunities for locals and small business.

Personal life

Pivaro graduated in 2003 from the University of Salford with an Honours degree in Contemporary Military and International History. In 2006, Nigel graduated from the University of Wales in Aberystwyth with an MSc in Social Science and Economics, specialising in terrorism and international relations.
