Listing =Black Butte is a
mountain located in theNorthern Coast Ranges ofCalifornia south ofMendocino Pass . It rises to an elevation of Unit ft|7448|0 near a deep river valley containing theBlack Butte River .California State Map, 2007.] Cite web|title=Black Butte, USGS PLASKETT MEADOWS (CA) Topo Map|work=USGS Quad maps|url=http://www.topoquest.com/map.asp?lat=39.72654&lon=-122.87222&datum=nad83&u=4&layer=DRG&size=l&s=25|accessdate=2008-06-29|publisher=TopoQuest.com] The mountain is also the county highpoint of Glenn County. In spite of this large elevation difference between the river valley (elevation:Unit ft|2800|-2) and Black Butte, its prominence is small due the neighboring Plaskett Meadows, a plateau at an elevation of unit ft|6500|-2. The high elevation of the mountain and plateau corresponds to heavy winter snowfall and a low average annual temperature.Cite web|title=Subsection M261Ba - Eastern Franciscan|url=http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/projects/ecoregions/m261ba.htm|accessdate=2007-11-20|publisher=USDA, Forest Service] US Forest Highway 7, a dirt road connection between the eastern and western segments of State Route 162 passes to the north of Black Butte. [Google Earth images.] However, this route is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall.References
