D-alanine-D-alanine ligase

D-alanine-D-alanine ligase

In enzymology, a D-alanine-D-alanine ligase (EC number|6.3.2.4) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction

:ATP + 2 D-alanine ightleftharpoons ADP + phosphate + D-alanyl-D-alanine

Thus, the two substrates of this enzyme are ATP and D-alanine, whereas its 3 products are ADP, phosphate, and D-alanyl-D-alanine.

This enzyme belongs to the family of ligases, specifically those forming carbon-nitrogen bonds as acid-D-amino-acid ligases (peptide synthases). The systematic name of this enzyme class is D-alanine:D-alanine ligase (ADP-forming). Other names in common use include MurE synthetase [ambiguous] , alanine:alanine ligase (ADP-forming), and alanylalanine synthetase. This enzyme participates in d-alanine metabolism and peptidoglycan biosynthesis. At least one compound, Phosphinate is known to inhibit this enzyme.
