Microsoft Sam

Microsoft Sam

Microsoft Sam is the default text-to-speech voice in Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It is used by the screen reader program built into the operating system.

There are other voices available in other packages like Microsoft Office or Microsoft Reader add-ons, such as Lernout & Hauspie Michael and Michelle. You may choose which voice you wish to use with the Control Panel's "Speech" dialog box.

In Windows Vista, it was replaced by Microsoft Anna.

Other Microsoft Voices

Besides Microsoft Sam, there are various other "computer default voices." Below is a list of them:

* Microsoft Mike
* Microsoft Mary
* Microsoft Anna
* Microsoft Lili (China)

There are many more for British English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish systems also.

Glitches

There are several glitches with Microsoft Sam he will try to pronounce words and get it wrong. Here is a brief list of glitches, that have been found. These include:

*Soy or Soi, Microsoft Sam will attempt to say Soy but instead make a sound like a helicopter blade. This led to a popular Internet meme. However, if "swah" is typed in, it sounds like the word soy but only either on its own or with a comma or full stop directly after it.
*Enjoy. However, there is only one condition in which he doesn't say it right. If a word begins with "th", then Microsoft Sam says it as "EnjWAH" (e.g. I enjoy the meal).
*Windows, when Microsoft Sam says tries to say Windows he will say "Winbos".
*Bling, Microsoft Sam will instead say "B-L-ing"
*Pointer, Microsoft Sam will pronounce it "Pwanter". Meaning he uses the French pronunciation of "oi".
*Pling, Microsoft Sam will pronounce it "Placing". He will pronounce placing the exact same way.
*Honest, Microsoft Sam pronounces it as "Inist", but if there is a word before "Honest" he will say it correctly (e.g. I am Honest).
*Honor, Microsoft Sam pronounces "Inir", but again if there is a word before "Honor" he will say it correctly.
*Crotch, Microsoft Sam pronounces it as "Crow's Nest". However, he can pronounce harsh profanity perfectly well. Said correctly if misspelt as "Krotch".
*Wasteman, Microsoft Sam can't say it as one word. Instead he says "Waste-e-man", and if one doesn't want him to pronounce the "e" in Wasteman, he will say "Wastman".
*Pow, Microsoft Sam just says the letters.
*Gegege, Microsoft Sam says "Gage".
*Toyota, Microsoft Sam says "Toytoda", Ferrari Microsoft Sam says "Feluhry"
*Pendulum, Microsoft Sam says "gendulum"
*Lion, Microsoft Sam says "leon"
*Talk dirty, Microsoft Sam sounds like he hits the microphone
*Mobile, Microsoft Sam pronounces it as "Moe bee ul".
*Niece, Microsoft Sam pronounces it as "Nee chay".
