On 1 May 2008, the President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee, Habu Ahmed Gumel, announced that the President of Nigeria, Umaru Yar'Adua, had approved the country's intention to bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Habu Ahmed Gumel was quoted in Nigerian press as saying the bidding process would need to commence immediately. He added, "There is a lot of work to be done. We are going to do a lot more work than we have done previously to ensure victory this time around." However a bid city was not put forward but most likely cities are Lagos or Abuja.

Although Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria, an official with the Nigerian Sports Commission stated in a report of Nigeria's Beijing 2008 preparations that Abuja was to be the nation's candidate city for Nigeria's bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Lagos bid for the Commonwealth Games for 1982, and no new venues have been built since the 1973 All-African Games which was the basis for the 1982 bid.

Plaid Cymru made ovations in 2006 for Cardiff to make a bid for the games. The governing Labour party said that it was unlikely to be successful given that Glasgow had the 2014 games.

In April 2008 the Canadian Federal Government came out with a sports hosting policy that places a Commonwealth Games hosting as being in doubt for 2018. The policy only allows for two multi-sport events in the 2008 to 2018 time period and Vancouver's Winter Olympics for 2010 is included in the quota. The Golden Horseshoe Area of Southern Ontario is lobbying to bid on the 2015 Pan Am Games and Edmonton, Alberta has a committee that started in 2003 to bid on the World University Games of 2015. On August 7th 2008, the Federal Government of Canada announced its tentative support for the bid to host the Pan Am Games of 2015. A bid win for the World University Games or the Pan Am Games will eliminate federal funding for a Commonwealth Games in Canada. Canada and North America last hosted the Pan Am Games in 1999. The United States will not mount a bid as the USOC is Bidding with Chicago for the 2016 Olympics. Late July the Stephen Harper Conservatives throw support behind a 2015 Pan Am Games. Ontario Premier Dalton McGinty travels to Beijing 2008 in August and get a good reception from PASO Officials whom govern the Pan AM Games .

Ron Clarke, a medallist at both Commonwealth and Olympic Games and present Mayor of the Gold Coast, is expected to take a key role in promoting the bid.

*flagicon|AUS Canberra, Australian Capital Territory The ACT's Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Andrew Barr, has indicated the city needs to plan for better sports infrastructure so as to make a bid for the Games. A 2022 bid has been suggested as more likely.

*flagicon|AUS Adelaide, South Australia State Opposition Leader Martin Hamilton-Smith has committed to a bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games if the Liberals are elected in 2010. [http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,24227167-5006301,00.html] However the bid will need to be made while the current Labor government is in power. The government has ruled this out with the treasurer, Kevin Foley, labeling the Commonwealth games a 'B" grade event. [http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/09/03/2354038.htm] Adelaide making a bid is looking increasingly unlikely with the governments lack of commitment and the large amount of capital works which would need to be undertaken to get sports facilities to international sporting standards.

New Zealand No firm commitment from these two cities yet. Preparing for the 2011 Rugby World Cup a main focus for now.
