CHIJ Saint Joseph's Convent is an all-girls Catholic secondary school in Sengkang, Singapore. The school is one of 11 Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) schools in Singapore.

History

The school was founded in 1938, as a private school in a rented house at Flower Road. Initially there were 21 pupils and three staff – comprising one nun from the Order of the Holy Infant Jesus and two teachers. Prior to World War II, the enrolment rose to 79 students.

After the war, the school reopened in 1945 in a bungalow lent to the school by a neighbour. New school buildings were erected at the original site in 1947, and at Highland Road in the 1950s.

The school taught both primary and secondary students until 1984. The school's primary classes were then moved out to form two new schools – CHIJ Ponggol (later renamed CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity) and CHIJ Our Lady of Good Counsel.

CHIJ St Joseph's Convent moved to a new campus in Sengkang in 2000.

The Uniform

The students wear a white blouse with a blue pinafore that is common to all CHIJ schools. In addition. the wear the school white ankle socks and shoes that are mainly white. The school councillors wear a grey tie with stripes.

There are four houses which the students are assigned to immediately when school begins.

* St Elizabeth (Yellow)
* St Emily (Blue)
* St Helen (Green)

Subject Combinations

Unlike many other schools, St Joseph's convent allows their students to choose their own subject combinations in upper secondary.

Homeroom system

St Joseph's convent was one of the first schools in singapore to implement a homeroom system. Instead of being confined to a single classroom the entire day, the students walk about the school to their different subject teacher's rooms.

The various homerooms are decorated differently according to the teacher's needs and the student's preference.

Permanent Homerooms also allow for specialisation, stocking of resources and arrangement of furniture to fit different learning styles and needs at every level. The stock of resources are readily accessible at anytime. Thus the teacher is able to leverage on IT to bring students to the world outside, beyond the traditional boundaries of the classroom.

Affiliations

The school has close connections with Montfort Secondary School and Holy Innocents' High School.

CHIJ St Joseph's convent also has two feeder schools - CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity (Punggol) and CHIJ Our Lady of Good Counsel (Burghley Drive)

The school is also affiliated to Catholic Junior College.
