Terrible One

Terrible One

Terrible One is a rider-owned bike company founded in Austin, Texas, United States in 1998. Founders Joe Rich and Taj Mihelich, already known as BMX professionals, decided to build a bike and a company to focus on meeting the demands of this constantly evolving extreme sport. Terrible One serves as a worldwide sponsor of Freestyle BMX riders worldwide with bike parts.

Background

The original Terrible One, or T1 as it is commonly referred to, team consisted of founders Joe Rich, Taj Mihelich, Paul Buchanan and Robbie Morales. They produced two frames; the Barcode which was designed by Joe and Taj as well as the Progression, which was a lighter trails frame designed by Morales. When Morales left to create his own company, Fit Bike Co., he took the Progression design with him, leaving the Barcode as T1's only frame.

Recent history

As T1 grew, it began to produce signature versions of the Barcode for individuals sponsored by them. Garrett Byrnes, Scott Malyon, Nate Wessel and Joe Rich all had signature barcodes at one point. Though there were minor differences between the frames, all of them featured the original Barcode's geometry as well as its distinctive seat-stay junction, which is neither a wishbone-junction nor a traditional A-frame junction.

T1 expanded its line when Spanish BMX rider Ruben Alcantara joined the team. In 2004 T1 produced a new frame model for Ruben, which was lighter than the Barcode and also featured different geometry as well as a press-fit bottom-bracket. For 2005 T1 introduced a new double-diamond style frame for Garrett Byrnes, and incorporated an integrated headset for all of their frames. In 2007 terrible one released their most up to date frame in the form of the "5-a-day" model. This frame is a lightweight technical street frame and is the signature frame of danny hickerson and joel moody.

A video released by the company in 2004, "You Get What You Get", featured riders such as Shawn "Elf" Walters and Scott Malyon.

Recently added to the family was the former Federal rider Sandy Carson, former Mutiny rider Danny Hickerson from Houston, Texas, Empire-bmx rider and video maker Joel Moody and most recently Russel Brindley from Australia.

Art Direction

Terrible One's artwork is done by Austin, TX local Michael Sieben, who is also responsible for the art direction at Bueno Skateboards and regularly contributes to Thrasher magazine.
