Springfield College is a college located in Springfield, Massachusetts. It is located upon "Watershops Pond", approximately two miles from downtown. There are two main sections to the campus, though not connected, and eleven sites around the United States that offer courses, especially in the School of Human Services (SHS Campus locations include: Houston, San Diego, Tampa, Boston, Manchester, St. Johnsbury, Charleston, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Wilmington) . Springfield College was first located on the second floor of the Armory Hill YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts as the International Young Men's Christian Training School. Just a few years after opening its doors to the first eighteen students in 1885, Springfield College could boast an international reputation as a pioneer in teaching and scholarship related to gym class, sports medicine, physical therapy, physiology of exercise, biomechanics, wellness, the training of YMCA executives, and many other fields. Today, Springfield College's undergraduate and graduate student body numbers more than 5,000.

History

Springfield College originated as a training school for YMCA professionals. Springfield College's 36,000 alumni work in 60 nations. Alumni have served in various capacities, such as a university president in China, initiators of the Olympic movement in Eastern European countries, and educational leaders in Central and South America. They have started shelters for the homeless in rural Vermont, and have changed the field of sports medicine.

The mission of Springfield College is to educate students in spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to humanity by building upon a foundation of Humanics and academic excellence. Founded in 1885, Springfield College is a private, coeducational institution that emphasizes the education of leaders for the allied health sciences, human and social services, sports movement activities, and the arts and sciences. Undergraduate and graduate programs reflect its distinctive Humanics philosophy—education of the whole person in spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to others.

It is world renowned as the "Birthplace of Basketball", a game created by alumnus and faculty member James Naismith in 1891; and as the alma mater of William G. Morgan, inventor of the game of volleyball; as well as for its long-standing and close relationship with the YMCA.

Stagg Field serves as the College's main athletic field. The baseball team plays at Berry-Allen Field.

In 2006 and 2007, the school hosted the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Final Four.

The Men's Volleyball team has captured 5 National Titles since the inception of the Division III national championship in 1998, under Head Coach Charlie Sullivan.

The Springfield College Women's Basketball team of 2004-2005, made school history, making the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division 3 basketball tournament.

Women's basketball, coached by Noami Graves, has won several conference tournament championships, including the previous season of 2006.

Springfield College graduates Rusty Jones G '86 and Jon Torine '95 participated in Super Bowl XLI as the Head Strength and Conditioning coaches of the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts, respectively.

Exercise Physiology is the most established branch of the Movement Sciences. The Exercise Physiology program of Springfield College has a long-standing tradition and prestigious reputation both nationally and internationally. Within the program, students examine the physiological responses of various systems to acute and chronic exercise. This includes the study of neuromuscular function, cardiovascular physiology, the hormonal and biochemical changes associated with exercise, as well as the thermoregulatory responses. Specialty areas such as body composition, patho-physiology and sports nutrition are also addressed.

The exercise physiology concentration is designed to prepare students for basic and applied research activities as well as continued study at the doctoral level.

Facilities available for research in Exercise Physiology include: a large multi-purpose performance assessment laboratory, a biochemistry laboratory, a computerized hydrostatic weighing facility and a dynamometry laboratory. Research conducted by students focuses primarily on applied human performance. The presentation of student research at regional and/or national scientific meetings along with the publication of research findings is a goal of the graduate experience in Exercise Physiology at Springfield College.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program The Physical Therapy graduate program entails three-and-a-half years that culminate in the awarding of an entry level physical therapy degree. Starting with a summer semester between the third and fourth year at Springfield, students will enter the professional DPT program as graduate students to earn an entry level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. You'll jump directly into the professional preparation with challenging and fascinating courses such as: human anatomy neuroscience kinesiology human movement research methodology and statistics

During your professional preparation, you’ll also do hands-on work in full-time clinical experiences in approved clinical education facilities.

We keep an eye on our curriculum by frequently reviewing practice and accreditation requirements to ensure quality. Once enrolled, you'll be required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average--but with physical therapy students tending to be in the top twenty percent of their graduating classes, this should be no problem. Besides being deeply involved in their studies, our students regularly participate in co-curricular activities and are service-oriented in their on- and off-campus focus.

Please note that Springfield College is currently accepting applications for incoming graduate students for June 2009
