Pungudutivu ( _ta. புங்குடுதீவு) is a small island composed of number villages that is just west of the
Jaffna Peninsula inSri Lankan Tamil dominated Northern Province. It is divided into 12 wards internally, each corresponding a major settlement. Most of the residents of the Island are Tamils with majority beingHindus and a minorityChristians . It has come to prominence due to number of cases of rapes and murders such asSarathambal andIlayathambi Tharsini during theSri Lankan civil war .
