Knapp of Detroit made the first land purchase here in 1828 on which he built a sawmill. When Grant Township was organized in 1866, it was named for then General (and later U.S. President)Ulysses S Grant . The settlement became known as Grant Center, but because there was another post office with that name in Michigan at the time, it requested the name Blaine, after RepublicanU.S. Senator James G. Blaine . census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,667 people, 571 households, and 464 families residing in the township. Thepopulation density was 55.9 per square mile (21.6/km²). There were 606 housing units at an average density of 20.3/sq mi (7.8/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.20% White, 0.12% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.72% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.10% of the population.There were 571 households out of which 41.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.6% were non-families. 14.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.18.
In the township the population was spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 108.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.5 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $58,603, and the median income for a family was $62,885. Males had a median income of $45,667 versus $27,768 for females. The
