Born in
Conneaut, Ohio , Randall enlisted as a private in the4th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in the fall of 1861. He served inNew York andWashington, DC , and in the field with theArmy of the Potomac . He was a2nd Lieutenant at theSiege of Yorktown ,Battle of Gaines' Mill ,Battle of Malvern Hill ,Second Bull Run (where he commanded Company C), and Fredericksburg; and a1st Lieutenant at theBattle of the Wilderness . He was brevettedCaptain for gallant service in theBattle of Antietam . He served as aMajor in the14th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment , part of Major GeneralGeorge Meade 's IX Corps on the Richmond-Petersburg Front in 1864, and was commander of the regiment at theBattle of the Crater . TheDansville Advertiser reported on7 September that he assumed command of the regiment on18 August . This article also reports that he was wounded in the battle on19 August . He was brevettedLieutenant Colonel , and thenColonel for gallantry in theBattle of Fort Stedman .Indian Wars
In 1873 he served under General
George Crook in Arizona during theTonto Basin campaign . OnMarch 27 ,1873 he led a small force that attacked a group of Yavapai Indians in theBattle of Turret Peak .OnApril 25 , he led a force that surrounded the camp of Tonto Apache chiefDelshay on upperCanyon Creek . Delshay surrendered when the troops started firing, the last of theApache war chiefs to surrender and move to a reservation.He also served with General Crook in the 1876Powder River Expedition during theBlack Hills War . From 1879 to 1880, Randall commanded Fort Reno inOklahoma .Alaska and the Philippines
In January 1900, in response to large numbers of immigrants flooding into the
Alaska n Territory in search ofgold , PresidentWilliam McKinley assigned Randall, now acolonel , to command an army division there. He was the first commander ofFort St. Michael , and submitted a recommendation calling for atelegraph line between the various Alaskan posts. By September, he was promoted toBrigadier General . In his Annual Report for theDepartment of Alaska , he noted that "theEskimo has been unnoticed by those he has befriended and has been allowed to die for the lack of proper care and food." He later served at New York andKnoxville, Tennessee , prior to commanding theDepartment of Luzon in thePhilippines from 1903 to 1905. After further duty inSt. Louis, Missouri , General Randall retired on8 October 1905 , and died on14 June 1918 inDenver, Colorado . He is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin.USS|General George M. Randall|AP-115 was named for him. He is also a Prominent Companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
