The Norwegian Nobel Institute (Norwegian: Det Norske Nobelinstitutt) was established in 1904 in Kristiania (today Oslo), Norway.
The principal duty of the Nobel Institute is to assist the Norwegian Nobel Committee in the task of selecting the recipient(s) of the Nobel Peace Prize and to organize the annual Nobel event in Oslo.
The institute is situated in the center of the city, just by the Royal Palace. Diagonally across the street is the U.S. Embassy.
The institute has a 180 thousand volume library related to peace and international relations. The Nobel Institute also has its own research department, organising research related to peace and war. The department is based on a fellowship program for visiting scholars from all over the world. The institute has a staff of five, headed by Geir Lundestad, professor of history at the University of Oslo.
The Nobel Institute arranges meetings, seminars and lectures in addition to holding so-called Nobel Symposia, exchanges of views and information to which it invites distinguished specialists from many countries.
