Apollodorus of
Damascus was a Greek [Encyclopaedia Britannica [http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9008022/Apollodorus-Of-Damascus "Greek engineer and architect who worked primarily for the Roman emperor Trajan (reigned 98–117)."] ] or Syrian [George Sarton (1936). "The Unity and Diversity of the Mediterranean World", "Osiris" 2, p. 406-463 [430] .] engineer, architect, designer and sculptor who flourished during the2nd century AD. He was born inDamascus , Roman Syria, and was a favourite ofTrajan , for whom he constructedTrajan's Bridge over theDanube for the 105-106 campaign inDacia . He also designed the Forum Trajanum andTrajan's Column within the city ofRome , beside several smaller projects. Apollodorus also designed the triumphalarches of Trajan atBeneventum andAncona . He is also widely credited as the architect of the Pantheon, and cited as the builder of theAlconétar Bridge inSpain .Trajan's Column , in the centre of the Forum, is celebrated as being the first triumphal monument of its kind. On the accession ofHadrian , whom he had offended by ridiculing his performances as architect and artist, Apollodorus was banished and, shortly afterwards, being charged with imaginary crimes, put to death (Dio Cassius lxix. 4). He also wrote a treatise on "Siege Engines" ("Πολιορκητικά"), which was dedicated to Hadrian.Notes
