Melbourne High School or Mel-Hi is a public secondary school located in Melbourne, Florida, United States and operated by Brevard Public Schools. The principal is Jim Willcoxon.

History

Old Melbourne High School

The original high school was built on New Haven Avenue in 1919. It is now the Henegar Center. In 1948, the old Eau Gallie High School on Pineapple Avenue closed. Their former students were bused to Melbourne High.^[1] Rotary International chartered their first Interact service club ever with 23 students at the school in 1960.^[2] Melbourne High School is also the start of the Academy of Business and Finance in Brevard. This is a NAF program.

The school experienced race riots during the period of integration from 1969-1972.^[3]

The school's International Baccalaureate Prep program started during the 2006-2007 school year.^[4]

Athletics

The school's mascot is the bulldog. The school's rivals are Satellite High School, Eau Gallie High School, and Palm Bay High School.^[5][6]

Recognition

• Football 2A 1966 State Champions. ^[7]
• Girl's Soccer 1987 State Champions,^[8], 2009,^[9] and 2010 5A State Champions^[10] As of January 16,2011, the team had won 70 games straight.^[11]
• Boy's Soccer 1994 5A State Champions ^[12], 2009, and 2010 6A State Champions^[13]
• Boy's Cross country won first in the state 4A Championships in 2007^[14] and 2008
• Girl's Cross country won first in the state 4A Championships in 2006^[15]

Campus

In 2008, the school installed an artificial turf football field^[16] and a new gym.^[17] In 2008, the school board started construction on a new eight laboratory science building, which was completed in early 2009.^[18]
