U.S. state ofMichigan . The population was 1,974 at the 2000 census. The village is within Sebewaing Township. This small community is known as the Sugar Beet Capital, due to the Michigan Sugar factory located within the village and the yearly "Michigan Sugar Festival". The Sebewaing area as well asthe Thumb , and the stateMichigan are big beet sugar producers.Geography

United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 1.7square mile s (4.3km² ), of which, 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (4.19%) is water. Its name derives from the Ojibwe word "ziibiiweng" meaning "by the stream."

The town has a large population of German ancestry. As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,974 people, 868 households, and 547 families residing in the village. Thepopulation density was 1,232.4 per square mile (476.4/km²). There were 946 housing units at an average density of 590.6/sq mi (228.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.99% White, 0.10% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.25% from other races, and 0.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.34% of the population.There were 868 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the village the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $32,721, and the median income for a family was $40,742. Males had a median income of $31,619 versus $23,125 for females. The
per capita income for the village was $16,894. About 13.6% of families and 17.5% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 32.7% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.Notes
