Kendra Sorenson would rather not visit her anti-social grandparents at the beginning of the first book. At 13 years-old she is overly cautious, safe and far from the adventurer and rule breaker that her brother is. However, while at Fablehaven she discovers a whole new magical world full of fairies and other mystical creatures. It doesn't take long for trouble to come though, and the witch Muriel Taggart releases the demon Bahumat. The situation becomes desperate when everyone but her is captured and she must risk her own life to seek the Fairy Queen for help. With instructions from the Fairy Queen, she creates a potion that causes the fairies to grow to human size, and they rally into an army to defeat Muriel and Bahumat. Once the demon and the witch are imprisoned, and the others are freed, the human sized fairies, around 300 of them, kiss Kendra on the face to return to their original size. Because of these 'kisses' the fairies bestow a special condition on Kendra and she becomes "Fairykind". This allows her to see the magical world without help, understand fairy languages, see in the dark, and recharge dead magical objects. She is also immune to some forms of magic, and was granted other special abilities. Kendra is also told that she has been selected as a handmaiden to the Fairy Queen and has essentially been adopted as one of their own. She is also friends with the fairy Shiara, who turns Mendigo do Kendra's will. In book 2, she befriends Vanessa, who gives her the Umite wax candle and crayon. At the end of the second book Kendra goes with Warren who battles the artifact guardian. After defeating the monster Kendra recharges the magical artifact which heals Warren's fatal injuries. Vanessa is revealed as a traitor and subsequently put into the Quiet Box. In book 3, Kendra is inducted into the Knights of the Dawn, where she meets Gavin, and they are sent on a mission with Warren and Dougan to retrieve a second artifact from a magical preserve in Arizona called Lost Mesa. Returning to Fablehaven, she finds the preserve about to be overthrown by the Shadow Plague. She once again goes to the Fairy Queen for help, who gives her a powerful talisman of light to destroy the source of the plague - the cursed nail. She is told that the one to connect the two will destroy the plague, but will also lose their life. Lena makes the sacrifice and touches the two, dying in the process. Patton informs her that the Journal of Secrets is not an empty book, but full of messages written in Umite wax. Book 4 will most likely reveal his messages to her to help her with her future challenges. Gavin also lets Kendra know in a letter that he is interested in getting to know her better. Kendra is both dreading, and looking forward to the future.

Seth Sorenson is Kendra's younger brother, 11, and has a much more out-going, risky, curious, and adventurous personality. Seth has great courage, but little patience, and he does not always think things through. Because of this, he tends to be the source of mischief as the story continues. In book 1, Seth gets turned into a mutant walrus because he turned a fairy into an imp unintentionally by holding her captive overnight. The family then has to go to Muriel the witch to change him back, and as a consequence one of the knots that binds the witch is lost. Against orders, Seth openes the window on Midsummer's Eve allowing goblins and other creatures into the house. These creatures kidnapped Lena and Grandpa Sorensen, and also turned Dale into a statue. This left Seth and Kendra alone to find a way of rescuing them. They later have the help of Grandma Sorensen, after they loose Muriel's last knot in order to free Grandma from her altered state. In book 2, Seth goes into a funeral home and gets bit by a statue of Olloch the Glutton causing the demon to awake and eventually grow strong enough and big enough to peruse Seth in order to eat him. Olloch devours him eventually but he survived in an impervious fairy cocoon given to him by Coulter. Seth takes a powerful courage potion and confronts the Revenant. He is successful in removing the cursed nail from the Revenant, defeating it. This allowed Kendra and Warren to pass through the revenant's territory and enter the tower. In the confrontation, Seth becomes immune to magical fear that some dark beings radiate. He also gained the ability to see some elements of darkness that are hidden to others. Seth visits the demon Graulus who appears in the third book and learns that Navarog, the dragon prince, was the one released from the Quiet Box, and that he retrieved the talismanic nail Seth had removed from the Revenant, and gave it to the demon Kurisock. Seth successfully retrieves the Chronometer and inadvertently brings Patton Burgess to the present time. Seth, Kendra and Patton then face the final battle to defeat the Shadow Plague.

The kids do figure it out, but soon afterward Seth, in a moment of bad judgment, makes it possible for unsavory creatures to enter the house, and Grandpa and Lena are kidnapped. They are held hostage by the witch, Muriel, at the Forgotten Chapel where she is endeavoring to free a demon named Bahumat. Grandpa is married to Grandma Sorenson who spends much of the first book in the form of a chicken. Grandma Sorenson is Grandpa Sorenson's wife, Ruth. She got turned into a chicken by a genie who is prisoner in the dungeon beneath the house. She was trying to gain information from the genie, but when one asks a genie a question one must first answer any question put to them by the genie. If you find yourself unwilling to answer the question, or if you lie, the genie is allowed to take a small revenge on you. This one turned Grandma into a chicken. Grandpa named her Goldilocks to keep the situation hidden from the children, but he did put the cage in the kids' room and allow them to play with her and take care of her. In Fablehaven when all seems lost Grandma/Goldilocks spells out "I AM GRAM" on the floor with her kernels of food and they take her to Muriel to change her back. After Muriel gets released, Grandma takes them to Nero the troll because he has a seeing stone and can tell them where Grandpa and Lena are being held. But they must trade something for this information. They convince him to accept a massage from Grandma in return for the information, and he agrees. They then go to rescue Grandpa and Lena, but things do not go well, and everyone ends up captured except Kendra. In the third book, Grandma gets turned into a shadow along with Grandpa. Kendra and Seth must destroy the Shadow Plague to save them.

After that, he went with Kendra to the Inverted Tower and battled through deadly traps and guardians to retrieve the secret artifact. In book 3 Warren accompanies Kendra during her first meeting with the Knights of the Dawn. Warren then goes with Kendra on a mission to get the artifact hidden on the magical preserve - Lost Mesa. When it is revealed that the artifact was moved to Fablehaven by Patton Burgess years ago, Warren goes with Seth, Dale, Stan and Ruth to retrieve it from the abandoned mansion. She left the water and gave up her immortality in order to save his life. Because of her immortal past she ages much more slowly than an ordinary human. She outlived Patton and had many exciting adventures, traveling the world. Now having grown old, she has returned to Fablehaven. She was kidnapped on Midsummer's Eve along with Grandpa and held captive by Muriel. After the battle, the fairies carry her back to her lake and restore her to her original form as a naiad. Her mind also changes, to the mentality of a naiad, and she no longer seems to care about the problems of humans, even those who were her friends. In book 3, "Grip if the shadow Plague", at the sight of her husband, Patton Burgess, she leaves the pond and returns to her mortal state to be with him. Later she says, "That spell [numbness of naiadic life] grips me only when I'm in there." Lena becomes a main character in helping Kendra, Seth, and Patton defeat the Shadow Plague in book 3. She personally destroys the source of the Plague, sacrificing herself to save Fablehaven.

In those three days Patton duels with a centaur, easily convinces Lena to leave the naiad pond again, and battled the dark creatures to defeat Ephira and Kurisock and the Shadow Plague. Patton revealed that he had defeated the dragon Ranticus, and that he was fairystruck. Patton buried Lena at the pond before returning to his own time. He told Kendra that the Journal of Secrets was his personal journal that he wrote in with the special Umite crayon, indicating that he would be sending Kendra messages from the past. It is anticipated that key messages from the journal will be revealed in the fourth book.

Hugo is a golem. He is a manufactured being made of soil and rocks, animated by a powerful spell and given rudimentary intelligence. He has no will of his own and will do whatever he is told. However, He was destroyed in the battle against Muriel and Bahumat. But the fairies rebuilt him, turning him into a true golem and giving him a spark of free will. In book 2, and into the third he shows signs of being able to do things that he is not ordered to do. He starts to sing and he is able to form his own opinions, such as choosing a favorite flower. In book 2, Hugo battles with Olloch the Glutton and loses an arm, which eventually grows back. In the beginning of the third book Seth is able to get Hugo's help getting into the Nipsies' kingdoms by asking him to help instead of ordering it. Hugo is very strong, about 10 feet tall, and has the general appearance of a large ape with disproportionately larger hands and feet. Seth had fun having Hugo throw pumpkins as far as he could, and in the third book Hugo and Mendigo play baseball. Hugo is enhanced by the fairies for the battle of the Shadow Plague.

When she was freed she used a spell to make him human size and gave him golem like intelligence. He follow any order given by his master. When he chases after Kendra in the first book, under orders from Muriel, he is unable to capture her because of her protection under the treaty. However, she is able to detach his arms and throw them into the naiad pond. When he attempts to retrieve them the naiads pull him in. In the second book release him and, still following his last order from Muriel, captures Kendra and takes her to Muriel. However, she is imprisoned under the hill where the forgotten chapel used to be, so as he's digging some fairies use their magic to turn him to obey Kendra. From this point on he becomes an strong ally. He is quite a bit stronger than he looks, and he can carry two people at once while running. He carries Tanu home in the third book after he is bitten by the transformed satyr. He is often used as a guard. In "Grip of the Shadow Plague" he is disassembled by evil brownies and rigged to lethal traps. It is unclear whether he was reassembled or not.

He presents to the Sorensons his collection of fairies that he had gathered from around the world. His most prized one was a Jinn Harp, of which there was thought to have only been one in the world. In book 3 it is mentioned that Maddox went on a mission to a fallen preserve in Brazil and has not been heard from since. Tanu went to search for him, but did not succeed in finding him. He did, however, leave a tub behind that exists in the same time and space as an identical tub in the attic in Fablehaven. Theoretically Maddox could climb into the tub in Brazil and someone could pull him out of it in Fablehaven.

Newel and Doren are satyrs. They are introduced in the series as Kendra and Seth are inadvertently stealing stew from an ogress. The satyrs are light hearted and fun, but they can be conniving. They tell Seth that if he brings them the batteries so that they can watch their portable television they will give him gold. Seth does bring them batteries and they give him gold which they have stolen from the troll, Nero. Seth and the satyrs make a similar agreement in the third book, and they enlist the help of Hugo to steal gold from the Nipsies. They end up getting the gold as a tribute for helping the good nipsies fend off the nipsies that have been affected by the shadow plague. The satyrs enjoy chasing hamadryads, and playing tennis, and are sometimes invited to parties inside the house. They are described as the "ultimate fair weather friends" and detest work. However, their admiration for Patton Burgess motivated them to take down and put back up tents. In the third book, Newel is infected by dark nipsies and turned into a dark satyr. Doren goes to the Fairy Queen's garden where he is safe. Newel later returns to normal, along with all the other magical creatures that had been affected by the shadow plague when it is defeated.

"Tanu", as he says people call him, is a large Samoan who is introduced to Kendra and Seth as an expert on potions. His full name is Tanugatoa Dufu. He was brought in to help recover the artifact from Fablehaven in the second book with Coulter Dixon and Vanessa Santoro. To demonstrate his potions abilities, he gives Seth a mild fear potion and Kendra a mild shame potion when he was introducing them to his work. When Vanessa is revealed as a traitor, she knocks Tanu unconscious so that she can gain control over him. She then uses him to help capture Grandma and Grandpa, and later sends him into the grove where the revenant lives. He is turned albino just as Warren and Coulter were. After Seth defeated the revenant, and Tanu is healed, he goes to the inverted tower just as Warren and Vanessa were about to be defeated by the artifact guardian. Tanu takes his enlarger potion and battles the cat-like beast, killing it. He sustained serious injuries, but was healed by the recharged artifact. In book 3 he attempts to rescue Maddox from the preserve in Brazil, but fails. He is bitten by the darkened Satyr Newel during a fight and turns into a shadow. Once the Shadow Plague is destroyed, he returns to normal.

Coulter is introduced to Kendra and Seth as an expert on magical items, relics and talismans. He is brought onto the preserve along with Tanu and Vanessa to help recover the secret artifact. He teaches Kendra and Seth about some of the magical items in his possession, including a magical glove that renders the wearer invisible, how a distractor spell works, and a magic cocoon that allows the occupant to survive any environment. He and Kendra have a feud because he believes that there are some places that it is ok for a male to go but not for a female, which he calls "an outdated sense of chivalry". In the second book he comes under the control of the narcoblix, Vanessa, and unknowingly leads Seth into the grove of the revenant. He is overcome by the revenant and turned catatonic and albino like Warren. He is healed when Seth defeats the revenant. In book 3, Coulter is turned into a shadowman by darkened fairies, but manages to be made whole with the help of Kendra and the talisman of light the Fairy Queen created. He aids in the final battle between Light and Dark creatures at the end of the book.

Muriel is the first villain of the Fablehaven series. She used to be the wife of a previous caretaker, but she became enamored with dark magic and turned evil. For her crimes she was imprisoned in a shack on the grounds of Fablehaven, held from using magic by a rope with magical knots tied in it. The knots could only be undone by a human who asked for a favor of their own free will. The person would blow on a knot and Muriel would use the magical power released by unraveling the knot to grant the person the favor they sought. She was originally imprisoned with thirteen knots. When Kendra and Seth first meet her She had only two knots left. One was undone so that Seth could be restored after the fairies turned him into a walrus-like monstrosity, and she was finally freed by Kendra and Seth in order to restore Grandma from her chicken form. She then tried to take over Fablehaven by releasing the demon Bahumat. Bahumat was bound by knots just as Muriel was, and because she was mortal, she used the power in those knots to make imps as big as humans so that she could use them as her minions, and release Bahumat in the process. Mendigo was also given life and turned big at this time. She almost won the battle in the first book, but Kendra sought the help of the fairy queen and defeated Muriel with an enlarged army of fairies. The fairies bound Muriel in the ruins of the Forgotten Chapel, along with Bahumat, and they caused a verdant hill to form over the ruins, once again imprisoning Muriel and Bahumat.

Bahumat is an ancient demon who plagued the area before the preserve was founded. Some Europeans imprisoned him in exchange for acknowledgment of ownership of the land that he had terrorized. Fablehaven was founded on this land. In 1826 Bahumat almost escaped, and afterward was moved to a new location underneath the old chapel. He is bound by knots similar to those that bound Muriel, but in greater multitude. Bahumat is not seen till the end of the first book as Muriel is trying to release him. She succeeds, but the fairies prevail in the end and imprison him underground.

She is a traitor and a member of the Society of the Evening Star. Vanessa has black hair and Seth kind of had a crush on her in the beginning, although he gets over it after she is revealed as a traitor. She temporarily joins forces with Kendra and Warren in the inverted tower in order to defeat the guardian cat and secure the artifact. After she is defeated she is imprisoned in the quiet box in the dungeon of Fablehaven so that she cannot control anyone whom she has bitten. He impressed them with his magician's skills, and told them he was sent by Coulter Dixon to get rid of the kobold Case. He convinced Seth to break into a mortuary to get a frog shaped statue, who turned out to be the demon - Olloch the Glutton. He tried to convince Kendra and Seth to accompany him on another mission, but they were warned by Grandpa Sorenson that he was not a friend, and likely a member of the Society of the Evening Star. He attempted to stop their escape with Vanessa by blocking the road with a straw dullion. Later in the story he is signed in on the register allowing him access to Fablehaven. We see him again after Vanessa takes over the Manor. He accompanies Vanessa in the battle with the artifact guardian in the inverted tower, where he loses his life to the cat-like monster.

Casey Hancock, who introduces himself as "Case" is a goblin-like creature called a kobold. He appears in Kendra's class at school, but only she can see him for what he really is. Everyone else sees him as a blond haired, hansom boy. As Kendra's friends swoon over his good looks, he asks them out on a movie date. He even goes as far as kissing some of her friends. Errol Fisk helps Kendra and Seth get rid of the kobold by having Seth steal a statue that is sacred to kobolds. When Case received the statue he immediately left, to return it to the Himalayan Mountains. However the whole thing was a setup because Errol Fisk turned out to be an agent of the Society of the Evening Star, and the statue was a demon Olloch the Glutton.

Olloch the Glutton is a demon who spends most of his time in a state of dormancy. While dormant he appears to be a statue of a frog. Seth is tricked into feeding the statue, thereby awakening the demon. The statue bites Seth, marking him as the target of the demon. The demon slowly comes to life and begins an unrelenting quest to find and devour Seth. He eats along the way, and as he eats he grows in size and power. He manages to breach the barriers of Fablehaven, and eventually succeeds in hunting down Seth, but Seth is protected by the fairy cocoon given to him by Coulter. Olloch consumes the cocoon and Seth passes through the demon's digestive system inside this cocoon and ...comes out the other side... safely. This satisfies the demon's quest, and Olloch returns to his dormant state.

Ephira made her first appearance in the first book when Kendra saw her on Midsummer's Eve and again at the Forbidden Chapel where she attempted to help Muriel set free Bahumat and destroy the preserve. She is described as a female apparition in black flowing garments that can entangle others in darkness. She used to be a beautiful hamadryad that fell in love with a former Fablehaven groundskeeper, who left her for another. Being a hamadryad, she was linked to a specific tree. After the Sphinx set the Dragon Prince free, he retrieved the revenant's nail and drove it into the tree. With this evil power, the demon Kurisock merged with Ephira's tree, and started the dreaded Shadow Plague. With Ephira's enhanced power from the nail, She was able to turned creatures of light into creatures of darkness. She was defeated when Lena pressed the light infused pebble to the revenant's nail in her tree destroying the nail, Kurisock, Ephira, and the Shadow Plague.

The Sphinx is a conundrum. Nobody knows his true form, although there are many theories. When Grandma takes Kendra and Seth to meet him in the second book he is then in the form of a black man with very dark skin and short beaded dreadlocks. He guards his secrets very carefully and changes locations often. He is either the greatest ally of the good side, or a traitor, and their greatest enemy. In the end of "", he came to Fablehaven to imprison Vanessa in the quiet box, taking with him the prisoner who was in it before. He also took the magical artifact that was recovered. At present the evidence seems to indicate that the Sphinx is indeed a traitor. It is hinted at by Vanessa that the prisoner that the Sphinx took from the quiet box was the most powerful of the dark dragons in human form, and that the Sphinx released him into the preserve before leaving. Originally, when Warren questions Dougan about whether the Sphinx is the Captain of the Knights of the Dawn, Dougan denies it. At the end of the third book, however, Dougan confirms that the Sphinx is in fact a traitor.

The demon Kurisock is one of the 4 known demons on the Fablehaven preserve. He is barely mentioned in book 2, but not a focal character until book 3. He is described as a demon more of shadow than substance. After the dragon prince Navarog was released, he found the revenant's talismanic nail that Seth pulled out and discarded. He gave the powerful nail to Kurisock, who inserted it into Ephira's tree. Then he merged with the tree. With the dark infused nail in the tree, both Kurisock and Ephira's power were greatly enhanced, and together they caused the Shadow Plague. When the nail is destroyed, Ephira's tree is also destroyed killing her and Kurisock in the process. To this point he is not seen, but when the plague is defeated, a black gelatinous mass is presumed to be what remains of Kurisock.

Other

Nero - Nero is a cliff troll that Grandma goes to for information on the location of Grandpa and Lena. He has this ability through a 'seeing stone' or something like a crystal ball. He is devious and greedy, but helpful in the end. He is convinced to give his information in exchange for a massage. Grandma and Grandpa go to him for help in the third book, but he is not seen by Kendra or Seth.

Shiara - Shiara is a fairy clad in silver, and has silver wings and short blue hair. Patton describes her as the most reliable fairy, and the only fairy he would trust. She herself tells Kendra that she is more serious minded than other fairies. She makes her first appearance after a hoard of fairies change Seth into a mutant walrus, she chews out Grandpa, and then flies off. She is seen next at the end of the first book as a leader of an army of human sized fairies that re-imprisoned Bahumat and Muriel. In book 2, she changed Mendigo to follow Kendra's will. In the third book she is one of the volunteer fairies willing to sacrifice their life to connect the light and dark talismans, but faints when trying to lift the light infused pebble because of its brilliance and power.

Mom and Dad - Mom and Dad (Scott and Kate Sorenson and Kate or Marla Sorenson, née Larsen) are Kendra and Seth's parents. Grandpa Sorensen reveals that Mom's name is Kate on page 5 of book one. But in book 3 Mom and Dad are referred to as "Scott and Marla" both on page 30 and page 33. The author has recently been questioned concerning this indiscrepancy, but no reply has been received yet. It is possible that Kate and Marla are her first and middle names. Anyhow, Mom and Dad are in the very beginning of "Fablehaven" when they are driving Kendra and Seth to Grandpa and Grandma's house. They are going on a Scandinavian cruise as laid out in Grandma and Grandpa Larsen's will. They are briefly in the second book when Kendra and Seth are being picked up by Vanessa. In the third book, Grandpa and Grandma Sorenson invite them to the preserve for a week. It was hoped that they would open their eyes to the magical creatures, but none of Grandma and Grandpa's efforts, short of just telling them, were successful.

Neil - One of the groundskeepers at the Lost Mesa secret preserve. He died when a chokepod touched him. He was a Native American apparently in his 50's, but he was also a Skinwalker. Skinwalkers have the ability to turn into another animal at will. Neil turns into a horse to save several members of the artifact search party when they were attacked by kachinas on top of Lost Mesa. Unfortunately Neil loses his life when he accidentally touches a choke pod deep within the Mesa.

Broadhoof and Cloudwing - Broadhoof and Cloudwing are centaurs that dwell in Fablehaven. They make their appearance in "Grip of the Shadow Plague". Patton duels with and defeats Broadhoof saving Seth from having to. Broadhoof is killed by Ephira in the final battle between light and dark creatures.

Graulus - A demon that has lived on Fablehaven for centuries. He was once one of the six most feared demons in the world, but has hibernated for decades. Graulus is interested by Seth, who he says showed unexpected courage in defeating the revenant that surprised Graulus. To thank him for the surprise, Graulus tells Seth about the revenant's nail and how Navarog, the prince of dragons that the Sphinx released from the Quiet Box, took the nail to Kurisock, who in turn created the shadow plague.
