- Networking and Information Technology Research and Development
The Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) program is a unique collaboration of more than a dozen Federal research and development agencies.
The NITRD Program seeks to:
* assure continued U.S. leadership in information technologies to meet Federal goals and support U.S. 21st century government, academic, and industrial interests;
* accelerate deployment of advanced and experimental information technologies to enhance national and homeland security; maintain world leadership in science, engineering, and mathematics; improve the quality of life; promote longterm economic growth; increase lifelong learning; and protect the environment; and
* advance U.S. productivity and competitiveness through long-term scientific and engineering research in information technology.
The NITRD Program stems from the High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 (Public Law 102-194) as amended by the Next Generation Internet Research Act of 1998 (Public Law 105-305). These laws authorize Federal agencies to set goals, prioritize their investments, and coordinate their activities in networking and information technology research and development. The NITRD Program has its focus on the following research areas:
* Cyber Security and Information Assurance (CSIA)
* Human Computer Interaction and Information Management (HCI&IM)
* High Confidence Software and Systems (HCSS)
* High End Computing (HEC)
* Large Scale Networking (LSN)
* Software Design and Productivity (SDP)
* Social, Economic, and Workforce Implications of IT and IT Workforce Development (SEW)
