- California, Shasta and Eastern Railway
The
California, Shasta and Eastern Railway was built by the Terry Lumber Company around 1897 and was first listed in ICC records on June 30, 1901. Terry Lumber operated the railroad at that time as the Anderson and Bella Vista Railroad. The railroad hauled lumber and was headquartered in Anderson. The 16 mile railroad operated in
Shasta County, California , between Anderson (located south of Redding) and Bella Vista (located northeast of Redding) via Palo Cedro. In 1913 the Anderson and Bella Vista was sold to the California, Shasta and Eastern Railway.
The railroad at one time proposed to build to Ingot, located northeast of Bella Vista along the Little Cow River. But the railroad instead diminished. The CS&E ceased operations in 1927 and the track was reduced to only six miles in 1937. On October 25, 1946 the line was abandoned.
The railroad connected with the
Southern Pacific Railroad mainline at Anderson.Locomotives
The CS&E had one locomotive, CS&E #1341. #1341 was an "American type"
4-4-0 steam locomotive built bySchenectady Locomotive Works (Builder No. 1457) in 1881 for the Southern Pacific Railroad. On 03/10/1909 the Southern Pacific sold the locomotive to the Anderson & Bella Vista, retaining its original numbering. The railroad also had one freight car.
