The company was founded in West Hollywood, CA and first appeared on the cover of German Vogue in 1987. It began selling vintage frames from a boutique and now includes a number of brands, including Oliver Peoples Vision, Mosley Tribes and Paul Smith Spectacles [2]. In addition to being sold in Oliver Peoples retail outlets, the glasses can be found at Neiman Marcus, Barneys New York, Nordstrom, Solstice Sunglass Boutique, and Bloomingdale's.
The brand has been featured in men's and women's fashion magazines, including GQ (UK)[3], GQ (France)[4], Men's Vogue [5], Elle [6], Cosmopolitan[7] and Women's Vogue[8]. In the month of March 2010, Oliver Peoples has been featured in eight major fashion magazines.[9]
Oliver Peoples eyewear are noted for their simple glasses cases and colorful glasses cleaning cloths included with genuine spectacles.
In 2006, Oakley, a subsidiary of Luxottica, acquired Oliver Peoples for $55.7 million[10].
Cultural references
In the show Burn Notice, the main character, Michael Westen, is a frequent wearer of Oliver Peoples Victory sunglasses, size 55 with Cognac lenses.
In the 2000 film American Psycho, the protagonist Patrick Bateman mentions that his yuppie colleague, Marcus Halberstram, has the same penchant for Oliver Peoples glasses as he does[11].
Oliver Peoples collaborated with Zooey Deschanel on her second successful short film, Catch a Tuesday[12], and frame in her name.
