Southwood Boys Grammar School is an independent school located in Ringwood, Victoria, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. It is the brother school of Tintern Girls Grammar School and was founded in 1999, accepting boys up to year 7. It now caters for boys from prep to year 12. It has a VCE and IB course; the latter of which is taken at the Tintern Campus. Students have access to many co-curricular activities including the unique Young Farmers program held at the Tintern campus.

History

Southwood accepted boys from prep to year 7 in 1999, then to year 8 in 2000 and so on until the first group of year 12s graduated in 2004. In its first years, Southwood had only 42 students from prep to year 7. The school grew progressively, slowly gaining more students, building new buildings to cater for them. Early on, Southwood only had the original building (currently housing the junior school) that it obtained from the primary school which previously occupied the site. A gymnasium, resource center and new classrooms were then constructed.

Head of Campus

The Head of Campus is the highest permanent position at Southwood (with only the Tintern Schools' Principal and Deputy Principal being higher.) Mr. Andrew Worner is the current Head of Campus, and was appointed in 2007 after the retirement of the then incumbent Mr. Michael Blood.

* Mr Andrew Worner (2007 - 2008)
* Mr Michael Blood (1999 - 2006)

During 2008, Mr. Andrew Worner announced that he would be leaving the teaching profession to further enhance his professional development, however will still remain in the education profession at large.Following Mr. Worner's resignation; Mrs. Jenny Collins announced that in 2009 the Head of Campus position would undergo significant changes. It was decided that in 2009; the responsibilities would be shared throughout three people; the Middle School and Senior College coordinators and the new Head of Campus (Operations) position.

It was announced that the people fulfilling these positions in 2009 would be:

* Mrs. Glenda Message (Head of Campus (Operations))
* Mr. Timothy Ford (Head of Senior College)
* Mr. Peter Harte (Head of Middle School)

Sport

Sport is compulsory for all students at Southwood. In years 7-10; all students participate in at least 160 minutes of scheduled sport per week - 80 minutes assigned to Physical Education / Outdoor Education classes, and 80 minutes assigned to Interschool / Recreational Sports. In Year 11 students are still required to participate in 80 minutes of Interschool / Recreational sports; however in Year 12 this is optional.

Music and Drama

The head of music at Southwood is Mr. Tim Collins; who facilitates Music Studies for all students. In Years 7 and 8; music forms a part of the core subjects; and students are typically taught minor riffs and songs on Acoustic Guitars; and use the computers to create music and play related games. Throughout years 7 - 10; all students are required to have at least 40 minutes a week of Singing with Mr. Collins. More talented singers will be invited to join one of the many choirs. During Term 2 each year; the Music Department holds a "House Singing" competition. In previous years, the Music Captain has run and facilitated this event; however in 2008 the event was run by the Director of Co-curricular Activities and the School Leader.

Bands and Drama also form a significant part of Southwood's Music; with a Musical being held yearly; bi-annual participation in the Rock Eisteddfod and participation in Band Competitions.

Song

In 2005, the school song, titled "Southwood Boys" was written by Paul Jarman, an Australian musician and was dedicated to Mike Blood, the head of campus at the time. The song is usually sung as part of the school's annual presentation night, the annual induction ceremony and occasionally in other important events.
