Zachary Taylor Wood, CMG (1860-1915) was acting Commissioner of the
North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) and Commissioner of theYukon Territory ofCanada .Born in Annapolis Naval Academy in 1860, where his
John Taylor Wood was stationed. Wood's great-grandfather wasPresident of the United States Zachary Taylor .Wood's family fled first to Halifax and later to
Ontario . Taylor studied atRoyal Military College of Canada atKingston, Ontario and served with the 90th Infantry Regiment at theBattle of Batoche in the 1880s.He joined the NWMP in 1885 as
Inspector and marriedFrances Augusta Daly in 1888 inNapanee, Ontario . His sonStuart Taylor Wood was born in Napanee and later served as Commissioner of theRoyal Canadian Mounted Police . He rose to the rank ofMajor in the RNWMP and served as Assistant and Acting Commissioner. He retired from the force due to poor health and died inAsheville, North Carolina in 1915.Mount Wood in the Yukon was named in his honour.
