William L. Wilson Freeway

William L. Wilson Freeway

The William L. Wilson Freeway is a portion of U.S. Route 340 located in West Virginia between Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and Charles Town, West Virginia. (Prior to entering West Virginia, the road is designated as Jefferson Pike.) It is named for William Lyne Wilson, who served in the U.S House of Representatives as a representative from West Virginia from 1883 to 1895, and as United States Postmaster General between 1895 and 1897.

The William L. Wilson Freeway is unique in that although it bears the designation of a freeway, it features several aspects not traditionally attributed to freeways. For example, a portion of the road is a two-lane undivided roadway, and also features at-grade intersections with traffic lights, a feature generally not found on freeways.
