Fakel Voronezh (1989), Spartak Moscow (1990-94),Real Sociedad (1994-96 and 2002-05),Valencia CF (1996-97), andCelta Vigo (1997-2002). Karpin was namedRussian Footballer of the Year in 1999. He retired after the 2005 season with Sociedad. He returned to football in 2007 to play forCoruxo FC in theTercera División , the fourth tier of the Spanish league pyramid.
