Before entering politics he was a notary public and advisor to the Czech government. He is a member of the Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party. Having once been close to Václav Havel and a strong opponent of Václav Klaus, Svoboda voted for Klaus in the 2008 presidential election without explanation for his dramatic u-turn.
