Bergrivier Municipality is a municipality located in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. As of 2001, the population is 46,325. Its municipality code is WC013.

Government

The mayor of the municipality is Sammy Claassen of the ID. It is divided into seven wards, with thirteen councillors.

The municipality has a total area of 4,263 km².

The municipality also borders the Atlantic Ocean on the west.

Demographics

As of the census of 2001, there are 46,325 people and 11,705 households residing in the municipality. The population density is 10.87/km². The household density is 2.75/km². The racial makeup of the municipality is Black African 5.04%, Coloured 75.57%, Indian/Asian 0.14%, and White 19.25%.

16.4% of all households are made up of individuals. The average household size is 3.96.

In the municipality the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 15, 16.8% from 15 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.9 males.

In the municipality 94.3% of residents speak Afrikaans at home, 1.8% speak English, 0.0% speak Ndebele, 3.4% speak Xhosa, 0.0% speak Zulu, 0.0% speak Northern Sotho, 0.1% speak Sotho, 0.3% speak Tswana, 0.0% speak Swati, 0.0% speak Venda, and 0.0% speak Tsonga. 0.0% of the population speaks a non-official language at home.

94.6% of residents are Christian, 3.7% have no religion, 0.5% are Muslim, 1.1% have other or undetermined beliefs.

9.7% of residents aged 20 and over have received no schooling, 23.3% have had some primary school, 10.7% have completed only primary school, 32.0% have had some high school education, 18.1% have finished only high school, and 6.3% have an education higher than the high school level. Overall, 24.4% of residents have completed high school.

52.6% of housing units have a telephone and/or cell-phone in the dwelling, 41.1% have access to a phone nearby, and 6.2% have access that is not nearby or no access. 87.7% of households have a flush or chemical toilet. 63.1% have refuse removed by the municipality at least once a week and 0.4% have no rubbish disposal. 73.2% have running water inside their dwelling, 90.3% have running water on their property, and 97.9% have access to running water. 84.7% of households use electricity for cooking, 81.2% for heating, and 90.6% for lighting. 77.8% of households have a radio, 69.0% have a television, 10.1% own a computer, 71.6% have a refrigerator, and 30.2% have a cell-phone.

5.2% of the population aged 15-65 is unemployed. Of the unemployed persons, 13.1% are Black African, 78.3% are Coloured, 0.2% are Indian/Asian, and 8.5% are White. 9.1% of Black Africans are unemployed, 3.6% of Coloureds, 4.8% of Indians/Asians, and 1.5% of Whites.

The median annual income of working adults aged 15-65 is R 8 727 ($1,312). Males have a median annual income of R 9 657 ($1,452) versus R 8 033 ($1,207) for females. The median annual income by race is R 7 694 ($1,156) for Black Africans, R 8 026 ($1,206) for Coloureds, R 13 615 ($2,046) for Indians/Asians, and R 46 213 ($6,946) for Whites.
