census-designated place s by theU.S. Census Bureau , theUnited States Postal Service includes the communities of Greater Landover, Langley Park, Adelphi, Chillum, Edmonston, Woodlawn, Landover Hills, and parts of New Carrollton to be part of a "greater" Hyattsville area. It should be noted, however, that only Adelphi and Chillum are adjacent to Hyattsville, while Landover Hills and Edmonston are incorporatedtown s with their owngovernment s independent of Hyattsville. New Carrollton is an incorporatedcity , and is separated from Hyattsville by the town of Riverdale Park.Geography

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 22,900 people, 7,696 households, and 5,656 families residing in the area. Thepopulation density was 5,560.9 people per square mile (2,146.1/km²). There were 8,600 housing units at an average density of 2,088.4/sq mi (805.9/km²). The racial makeup of the area was 4.14% White, 92.03% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.35% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.90% of the population.There were 7,696 households out of which 40.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.0% were married couples living together, 34.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.40.
In the area the population was spread out with 33.3% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 5.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 85.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.4 males.
