Turkish general election, 1973

Turkey's 8th general election was held on October 14, 1973 to select 450 MPs for the new term of TBMM. This election marked the comeback of CHP, long years after they lost the power to right wing liberal conservatism. On the other hand, conservative front would have to wait for ten years before they can gain the majority of the votes in an election again.

185 seats were not enough for CHP to form the government so they formed an alliance with the religious oriented MSP of Necmettin Erbakan. This controversial government could only last for ten months before its fall. The most important decision of the government was the debatable intervention to Cyprus which created an international tension that hasn't been resolved for more than thirty years.
