Lake Barkley was formed in the early 1960s when a dam was constructed on the Cumberland at Grand Rivers. Two communities with a combined population of 3500 rested on the banks of the Cumberland. When the river was impounded, or flooded by the dam, the two towns - Eddyville and Kuttawa - had to be relocated. Now, these two towns literally run through Lake Barkley.

According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 2.6square mile s (6.8km² ), of which, 1.9 square miles (5.0 km²) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) of it (25.95%) is water.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 596 people, 220 households, and 157 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 307.1 people per square mile (118.6/km²). There were 317 housing units at an average density of 163.3/sq mi (63.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.14% White, 2.52% African American, 0.84% Native American, and 0.50% from two or more races.There were 220 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.7% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 26.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.61.
In the city the population was spread out with 14.1% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 18.3% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 36.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 55 years. For every 100 females there were 70.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 68.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,357, and the median income for a family was $55,208. Males had a median income of $48,571 versus $31,375 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $21,355. About 5.6% of families and 7.7% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 11.9% of those under age 18 and 7.0% of those age 65 or over.References
