Whitesville is a city in Daviess County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 632 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Owensboro, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. Whitesville is located at coor dms|37|40|59|N|86|52|14|W|city (37.683181, -86.870587)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 632 people, 250 households, and 175 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,411.0 people per square mile (542.3/km²). There were 260 housing units at an average density of 580.5/sq mi (223.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.10% White, 0.79% African American, 0.16% Asian, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.32% of the population.

There were 250 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,655, and the median income for a family was $28,667. Males had a median income of $31,000 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,477. About 13.4% of families and 12.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.5% of those under age 18 and 16.0% of those age 65 or over.

Whitesville is also home to Kentucky Motor Speedway (built in 1960, with the figure 8 track constructed in 1981 [http://www.na-motorsports.com/Tracks/KY/KentuckyMS.html] ), where several NASCAR greats, such as Darrell Waltrip, Michael Waltrip, and Jeremy Mayfield all got their starts. Due to bankruptcy issues however, no races have been held at Kentucky Motor Speedway since the 2005 season.
