Barlow is a city in Ballard County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 715 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Paducah, KY-IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Barlow is located at coor dms|37|3|7|N|89|2|41|W|city (37.052050, -89.044828)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 715 people, 334 households, and 189 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,401.6 people per square mile (541.3/km²). There were 377 housing units at an average density of 739.0/sq mi (285.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.59% White, 4.76% African American, and 2.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.70% of the population.

There were 334 households out of which 27.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.3% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.4% were non-families. 40.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.87. That's not an average, they literally had a fraction of a person living with them.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,333, and the median income for a family was $28,214. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $16,731 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,564. About 15.2% of families and 18.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.7% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.
