Palace under the Four Winds

Palace under the Four Winds

Palace under the Four Winds ( _pl. Pałac pod Czterema Wiatrami) sometimes known as "Tepper Palace", is a baroque palace in Warsaw located at Długa Street 38/40.

The palace was built in about 1680, probably by Tylman van Gameren's design for the significant merchant Stanisław of Małopolski Coat of Arms. The palace was subsequently put up for sale - in 1685 it was sold to Jan Dobrogost Krasiński, in 1698 to Andrzej Chryzostom Załuski and later to bishop of Płock Andrzej Stanisław Kostka Załuski.

From the 1730s the proprietor was Franciszek Maksymilian Ossoliński, and later Michał Kazimierz Radziwiłł, called "Rybeńko", who reconstructed the palace in the rococo style, probably according to Johann Sigmund Deybel's design. The magnificent sculptures of palace's enclosure depicting the Four Winds (Notus, Boreas, Zephyrus and Eurus) are from that period. The artist is unknown, but he probably participated in decorating the Saxon Garden.

At the end of 1760s Szymon Bogumił Zug built a tenement situated close to the palace for Warsaw banker Piotr Tepper. More than twenty years later the palace was purchased by Piotr Karol Tepper Fergusson, heir to an enormous fortune of his uncle - Piotr Tepper. Shortly after a great bankruptcy of the Tepper Bank in 1794 caused by the lost war of independence with Russia, Piotr Karol squandered his uncle's wealth. He was also apperently robbed by his family, partners and even servants. After Tepper went bankrupt the estate was auctioned and it was purchased by a merchant Karol Duckert in 1801. Finally in 1927 it was bought by the State Treasury to house the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.

The Palace under the Four Winds was deliberately burned down and demolished by the Germans after collapse of the Warsaw Uprising.
