Shanghai Cricket Club

Shanghai Cricket Club is a cricket club based in Shanghai, China. The club was founded in 1863 by gaining its first ground which was in the centre of the horseracing course owned by then Race Club. After a long interruption from 1949, the club was reestablished in 1994 and moved to current ground in Pudong years later.

History

Before 1949

The first recorded cricket match in Shanghai was played somewhere in Hongkou on April 22, 1858.

In 1863, the first true cricket ground was bought by the Shanghai Recreation Fund from the Race Club. The ground was located in a racecourse where now is People’s Square and People’s Park on the corner of Nanjing Road and Jiangxi Road.

The inter-port match with Hong Kong Cricket Club began in 1866 as series of home and away fixtures which continued up until 1948, just prior to the PLA takeover of Shanghai. The club also closed while gambling and horseracing were banned by the new Communist government.

Reincarnation

By HKCC and MCC’s help and efforts of cricketers in Shanghai, the club was reestablished in 1994. The founding Chairman and President are Richard Graham and the Indian Consul General Subra Subramaniam respectively.

The club began to host Shanghai International Sixes in May 1997. The game was repeated in 1999 and has since become an annual fixture.

In 2001, SCC moved to the current ground in Jinqiao, Pudong.
