Chao dacitic lava dome separates it from Cerro Paniri, a stratovolcano, and to its east lies Chillahuita, another dacitic lava dome.
Cerro Chao has a volume of about 26 cubic kilometres (6.2 cu mi), making it the Earth's largest lava dome of its kind.
