Playing career
Club
Cussen plays his club football with his local club in Glanmire while he plays his club hurling with its sister club called Sarsfield's. He first tasted success as a member of the 'Sars' under-21 team in 2003. That year Cussen won a county title at under-21 level following a comprehensive 3-11 to 0-12 victory over Valley Rovers. He later joined the club's senior hurling team and lined out in his first senior county championship decider in 2008. Once again he ended up on the winning side as Sarsfield's defeated Bride Rovers. Cussen played a key role in the victory as he scored a total of 1-2 to launch a great comeback.[1] It was the club's first senior county title since 1957. He won a second county title in 2010 when Sarsfield's beat Glen Rovers in the final.
Inter-county
Cussen first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork under-21 hurling team in 2005. That year he picked up a Munster title in that grade following a 4-8 to 0-13 defeat of Tipperary.[2] Cork, however, were later defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final.
In 2007 Cussen made his big break onto the Cork senior football team. It was an interesting year for the Cork team. After being defeated by arch-rivals Kerry in the Munster final, both sides later met for a second time in the All-Ireland final. It was the first all-Munster football championship decider in the history of the GAA. The game, however, turned into an absolute rout and an embarrassment for Cork. A final score line of 3-13 to 1-9 gave Kerry a second consecutive All-Ireland title.[3]
In 2008 Cork squared up to Kerry in the Munster final once again. At half-time the game looked lost for 'the Rebel's as they trailed by eight points, however, a goal by Cussen revived his side's fortunes. The final score of 1-16 to 1-11 gave Cork a remarkable victory and gave Cussen a coveted Munster title.[4] Both side later met again in the All-Ireland semi-final. Once again Cussen's side fell behind, however, they fought back to secure a draw and a replay the following week. That game was just as exciting as the others in the trilogy, however, Kerry were the victors on that occasion. 2009 saw Kerry defeat Cork in the All-Ireland final.
In 2010 Cussen switched codes and became a member of the Cork hurling panel.
