Doomben Roses

The Doomben Roses is an Australian Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early May at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The race is open to three-year-old filles and is run over a distance of 2020 metres (approximately 1¼ miles). It is currently the main lead-up race for the Queensland Oaks; however, the Brisbane Racing Club has proposed that this race will be renamed the Queensland Oaks, with the current Queensland Oaks becoming a fillies and mares race.^{[citation needed]} Prizemoney in 2008 was A$176,100.

History

• The Doomben Roses originated in 1996 as a Listed race until 2002.
• 1996 to 1997 – 1915 metres.
• In 1998 it was increased to its present 2020 metres.

The most notable winner of the race is 2001 winner Ethereal, who went on to win that year's Melbourne Cup. In winning the 2002 race, Palidamah set a new speed record of 2:01.95 for the current distance.

To date, Roger James is the only trainer to win this race twice.
