The nihongo|Jōetsu Line|上越線|Jōetsu-sen is a major rail line in
Japan . Part of the JR East system, it runs fromTakasaki Station in Takasaki,Gunma Prefecture , to Miyauchi Station in Nagaoka,Niigata Prefecture , linking the northwesternKantō region and theSea of Japan coast of theChūbu region .Before the opening of the
Jōetsu Shinkansen in1982 , the Jōetsu Line operated frequent service of express trains connectingTokyo and Niigata. Now the line is dominated by local andfreight train s.The
2004 Chūetsu earthquake seriously damaged the Joetsu Line, causing JR East to close it for about two months.The branchline of the Jōetsu Shinkansen between Echigo-Yuzawa Station and Gala-Yuzawa Station (
