Kukpowruk River

Kukpowruk River

The Kukpowruk River is a 160 mile long river in North Slope Borough, Alaska, United States, which flows into the Chukchi Sea. [USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). [http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/.] Accessed Sept 8, 2007.]

The Inuit name probably means "fairly large stream (Kukpauraq)" or "a stream (Kugauraq)." The name's earliest published use appears to be in John W. Kellt's "Eskimo Vocabulary," 1885-89, where it is listed as "Kook Pow ruk."
