As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 832 people, 335 households, and 233 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 543.1 people per square mile (209.8/km²). There were 371 housing units at an average density of 240.7/sq mi (93.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.92% White, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84% of the population.There were 335 households out of which 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,714, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,476 for females. The

Hedrick schools were forced into closing by the state of Iowa in 1990 due to budget concerns, making them the first school in the state to have this happen to them. Russell Schools have also been closed by the state for the same issue.fact|date=June 2008
