"Hate That I Love You" is a song by pop singer Rihanna, released as a third single from her third studio album, "Good Girl Gone Bad". It features R&B-pop singer Ne-Yo, who had worked with Rihanna previously, contributing to her 2006 hit "Unfaithful". The song was produced by Stargate, who also produced Rihanna's 2006 song "Unfaithful" and "Sexy Love" by Ne-Yo. It is noted, along with another Stargate production on the album, for having a similar structure and melody to their other works.

The song was nominated for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals at the 50th Grammy Awards.

Writing and music structure

"Hate That I Love You" is a duet by Rihanna and American singer-songwriter Ne-Yo, who also wrote the album's title track. In an interview, Rihanna said "That song [Hate That I Love You] , when it first starts off, you think it's a sexy song, but you have to listen to the lyrics. It's a really deep song." Reception

MSN remarked "Hate That I Love You" for being "nowhere near as poppy" compared to the song's predecessor Umbrella, "but is a classy R&B song with a strong melody," with " [good] vocal performances from the pair and lyrics which tell a familiar tale in a refreshingly uncliched manner." In the UK, the single peaked at number fifteen upon its physical release. In Australia, "Hate that I Love You" debuted at number forty-eight on the Australian ARIA singles chart, and descended to number forty-nine the following week. However in its third week, the song ascended to number eighteen, jumping thirty-one spots to become one of the biggest jumps in ARIA charts history. It eventually peaked at number 14 on the Australian charts. In Spain, the Spanish version featuring David Bisbal debuted at number five in the digital track chart, and it peaked at number three for three consecutive weeks. Hate That I Love You also became a smash hit in Brazil as it topped the Brazilian Hot 100 Singles chart. With that good chart performance it was a top 10 hit on the global chart peaking at number 6.

Music video

Rihanna, with director Anthony Mandler shot the music video for "Hate That I Love You" in Los Angeles on August 13th, 2007. The video was premiered on her official website on September 24, 2007. The video also debuted on TRL on October 1, 2007 for a First Look and debuted at number nine the next day for the first time.It only had been on TRL for twelve days and has been number one twice. The video peaked at number two on its ninth day, on BET's 106 & Park. It was her most successful video on 106 & Park, until Take a Bow became her first song to reach the number one position.

The video begins with Rihanna laying on a bed in what could be an apartment or hotel room. She browses through her clothes that are strewn on the floor. Ne-Yo is shown walking down the street. Rihanna eventually begins dressing, and Ne-Yo enters the building she's in. She puts on a black trench coat and leaves her room as Ne-Yo enters an elevator. They meet, smile at each other, and then move on without speaking. Rihanna then goes outside the building and boards a car, while Ne-Yo is shown knocking on his girlfriend's door. She greets him wearing a robe. Rihanna is then shown in the car, smiling at her date.

The video for "Hate That I Love You" featuring David Bisbal is the same as the original video, but with David's scenes edited in the original video and Ne-Yo's parts removed.

Version

A new version of the song, titled "Cómo Odio Amarte", leaked online on December 2 2007. Spanish singer David Bisbal sings Ne-Yo's part in Spanish, however, Rihanna's parts are still in English, so David's vocals are just edited in the original version of the song, and Ne-Yo's vocals are removed. This version is included in a bonus disc on Bisbal's "Premonición DVD" as well as on the re-release of "Good Girl Gone Bad".

Two more versions of the song have been released on the Asian edition of . Hong Kong singer Hins Cheung (Cheung King Hin), sings Ne-Yo's part in Cantonese & Mandarin, with Rihanna's part remaining the same in both versions.
