Lucie Pépin (born
September 7 1936 ) is a Canadian politician.A
Registered Nurse by profession, in the1960 s, Pépin served as head nurse in thegynecology department and then at thefamily planning clinic of Notre-Dame Hospital inMontreal , and was cross-appointed to theUniversité de Montréal 's faculty of medicine. In the1970 s, she was an administrator at the Canadian Committee for Fertility Research in Montreal, and a lecturer at the Université de Montréal. From1979 until1984 , Pépin was vice-president and then president of the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women.Pépin entered the
Canadian House of Commons in the 1984 election when she became the LiberalMember of Parliament for Outremont,Quebec succeedingMarc Lalonde . She was defeated in the 1988 election, during which abortion was a key issue. Some have suggested that she lost the ultra-conservative Hasidic vote, and thus the seat, because of her pro choice stance. 1993 to1997 , she was a commissioner on the nationalparole board. In1997 , she was appointed to theCanadian Senate on the recommendation of Prime MinisterJean Chrétien , and served asSpeaker pro tempore of theUpper House from 2002 to 2004.
