Totternhoe Castle was an
11th century castle in the village ofTotternhoe , in the county ofBedfordshire ,England (gbmapping|SP97892210).The castle was a Norman motte and triple bailey castle. It overlooked the villages of
Dunstable andStanbridge . The Norman builders levelled the top of a hill, creating a wide area ofchalk grassland . Thefort , on top of a raised mound, was surrounded by a wall; at first made from timber and later stone.The site was
excavated between1921 -1932 , and again in2001 . The 2001 excavation revealed evidence that the castle was built on the site of aprehistoric and Roman enclosure.The site, which is a
Scheduled Monument , is currently "Totternhoe Knolls Nature Reserve". Only earthworks remain of the castle.References & External links
