Boone is a city in Des Moines Township, Boone County,GR|6 Iowa, United States. It is the county seat and is the principal city of the 'Boone, Iowa Micropolitan Statistical Area' which encompasses all of Boone County, Iowa. This micropolitan statistical area, along with the 'Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area' comprise the larger 'Ames-Boone, Iowa Combined Statistical Area'. The population of the city was 12,803 at the 2000 census.

Boone has a wide array of recreational activities. Boone has the 2nd most used bowling alley in the state, Imperial Lanes.Fact|date=March 2008 Boone also has a number of scenic parks and a variety of camps. Boone is located on the historic Lincoln Highway and was the birthplace of First Lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower. The city has a long railroad history and is home of the tourist Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. Boone is also the headquarters of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Fareway chain of grocery stores. It is also home to a campus of the Des Moines Area Community College. Boone is the home of Kate Shelley, a railroad heroine of the late 19th Century. The Ledges State Park- designated one of the first of Iowa's state parks in 1924- is located just outside of the town of Boone and is today one of Iowas' most visited parks.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 12,803 people, 5,313 households, and 3,363 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,433.9 people per square mile (553.6/km²). There were 5,585 housing units at an average density of 625.5/sq mi (241.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.34% White, 0.32% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.35% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.87% of the population.

There were 5,313 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% were married couples living together, 9.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,179, and the median income for a family was $48,213. Males had a median income of $32,106 versus $22,119 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,995. About 5.4% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.9% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.

*Douglas Wayne Shetland, A fictional character from the Tom Clancy series Splinter Cell.
*Chad Rhinehart, an offensive lineman for the Washington Redskins. In college he was an all-American for the University of Northern Iowa.
*Bernhart Paul Holst, Author of many books and poems. He also founded the Holst publishing company in 1900. Started teaching in Boone schools in 1883 and by 1889 he was elected Boone County Superintendent of Schools. He was elected for five, two year terms. He married Ella Rose in 1887 and had two children, Bertram Paul (Burt) & Blanche Alcott in 1894. He was also the author of the encyclopedias at the time called "The New Teachers' And Pupils' Cyclopedia" witch were printed in Boone, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Toronto. Also built the Holst Hotel.((Bernhart Paul Holst 9/18/1861- ?/??/1940))
