The title theme to "Batman" is one of the best-known theme tunes of all time. Composed by Neal Hefti, the song is built around a minimalistic and foreboding but catchy guitar hook reminiscent of spy film scores and surf music. It is a simple twelve bar blues progression using only three chords until the coda. The lyrics to the theme consist of ten cries of "Batman!", which were originally thought to be sung by a female chorus; however, Adam West's book "Back to the Batcave" reveals the "voices" to actually be instrumental, rather than vocal. These ten repetitions of "Batman!" were then followed by a coda of "Dadadadadadadadadadadadada...Batman!"

"Batman (1989 film)"

There were two albums released in conjunction with "Batman". The first was an album by Prince featuring songs from the film (including "Batdance") and others inspired by it. It is considered the official soundtrack album.

The second album features the original score by composer Danny Elfman. According to the DVD Special Edition, Elfman says that Jon Peters was not sure about him as a composer until Tim Burton made him play the main titles. The theme score, however, went on to become an incredibly iconic piece. It also served as the basis for the theme tune to "", which premiered in 1992 although the theme tune was later retooled.

"Batman Returns"

The "Batman Returns" score was composed and performed by Danny Elfman. The soundtrack also includes "Face to Face", written by Siouxsie & the Banshees and Danny Elfman, used to promote the movie prior to its release. Two versions of the music video were made (the other added shots from the movie), and a club version, remixed by 808 State, was released. Elfman added chorus to main theme making it similar but not as dark as the original.

"Batman: The Animated Series"

The soundtrack itself was more akin to a film soundtrack (owing in part, no doubt, to the desire to make it have a similar feel to the Danny Elfman score of the two Burton films).

"Batman Forever"

Hit singles from the soundtrack include "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" by U2 and "Kiss From a Rose" by Seal, both of which were nominated for MTV Movie Awards. "Kiss From a Rose" (whose video was also directed by Joel Schumacher) reached #1 in the U.S. charts as well.

The soundtrack itself, featuring additional songs by The Flaming Lips, Brandy (both songs also included in the film), Method Man, Nick Cave, Michael Hutchence (of INXS), PJ Harvey, and Massive Attack, was an attempt to (in producer Peter MacGregor-Scott's words) make the film more "pop." The soundtrack was hugely successful, selling almost as many copies as Prince's soundtrack to the 1989 "Batman" film.

In 1996, "Kiss From a Rose" won three Grammies for best male pop vocal performance, best record and best song.

A second album, featuring over 40 minutes of Elliot Goldenthal's "Original Score", was released two weeks after the soundtrack album. The "Original Score" is complete with big brass, insane strings and the kind of fairground noises you hear clowns making with their toys; yet there is still that ominous, sweeping, anthemic sound.

"Batman & Robin"

Despite the overwhelming negative publicity the film received, its soundtrack became very popular and was well received.Fact|date=February 2007 The soundtrack included songs by R. Kelly, Arkarna, Jewel, Goo Goo Dolls, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and The Smashing Pumpkins, whose song "The End is the Beginning is the End" rolled over the movie's closing credits. Three songs from the soundtrack became top-ten hits in the United States; Jewel's contribution, a radio-mix version of "Foolish Games", as well as Bone Thugs-n-Harmony's "Look Into My Eyes" and R. Kelly's "Gotham City." There was never an official release of Elliot Goldenthal's score to the film, aside from the brief suite on the song album, but bootleg copies are in fairly wide circulation.

"Batman Begins"

The film score for "Batman Begins" was composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. Director Christopher Nolan originally invited Zimmer to compose the film score, and Zimmer asked the director if he could invite Howard to compose as well. The two composers collaborated on separate themes for the "split personality" of Bruce Wayne and his alter ego, Batman. Zimmer and Howard began composing in Los Angeles and moved to London where they stayed for 12 weeks to complete most of their writing. Zimmer and Howard sought inspiration for shaping the score by making set visits to "Batman Begins". The film's orchestra was developed from members of various London orchestras, and Zimmer chose to use more than the normal amount of cellos. Zimmer enlisted a choir boy to help reflect the music in the film's scene where Bruce Wayne's parents are killed. "He's singing a fairly pretty tune and then he gets stuck, it's like froze, arrested development," Zimmer said. Zimmer also attempted to add human dimension to Batman, whose behavior would typically be seen as "psychotic", through the music. Both composers collaborated to create 2 hours and 20 minutes worth of music for the film.cite news | author=Spence D | url=http://music.ign.com/articles/624/624641p1.html | title=Batman Vs. "The Dark Knight"

In an October 2006 interview, composer Hans Zimmer confirmed he and James Newton Howard would be returning to score "The Dark Knight", teaming up as they did on "Batman Begins". [cite news| author=Dan Goldwasser | url=http://www.soundtrack.net/features/article/?id=210 | title=Breaking the Rules with Hans Zimmer, Part 3 | publisher=SoundtrackNet | date=2006-11-02 | accessdate = 2006-11-03 ] In July 2007, Zimmer reported that he was experimenting with new ideas with the score for "The Dark Knight". The composer believed that the character Batman had not yet earned his score in the previous film and that the score would be earned in the sequel. According to Zimmer, "I now want to go and complete that theme... I felt I had a good start, and now it would be really nice to develop that world a little further."
