The first Indiana State Basketball Championships were held in 1911. In 1913 and 1914, the state saw its first back-to-back champions from Wingate, Indiana.
Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 299 people, 126 households, and 82 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 1,086.0 people per square mile (412.3/km²). There were 146 housing units at an average density of 530.3/sq mi (201.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.67% White and 0.33% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.There were 126 households out of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 31.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $28,750, and the median income for a family was $42,500. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $21,250 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $14,123. About 15.9% of families and 22.2% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 30.7% of those under the age of eighteen and 23.7% of those sixty five or over.References
