Plymouth is a city in Marshall County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,840 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Marshall CountyGR|6. Plymouth was the site of the first retail outlet of defunct U.S. retailer Montgomery Ward in 1926.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.0 square miles (18.1 km²), of which, 7.0 square miles (18.0 km²) of it is land and 0.14% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 9,840 people, 3,838 households, and 2,406 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,414.0 people per square mile (545.9/km²). There were 4,100 housing units at an average density of 589.2/sq mi (227.4/km²).

There were 3,838 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 31.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.11.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 12.4% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.

Festivals

Plymouth has three annual festivals. The largest is the [http://www.blueberryfestival.org/ Blueberry Festival] held each Labor Day weekend since 1966. Centered in Plymouth's large Centennial Park, the Blueberry Festival is attended by over 500,000 people each year, second only to the Indianapolis 500 in size for Indiana weekend events. The Blueberry Festival includes dozens of live musical acts on three stages, a large parade, several running events, a tractor pull, a horse pull, softball tournaments, basketball tournaments, arm wrestling competition, hot air balloon launch, tennis tournament, bike tour, fishing derby, car show, motorcycle show, and local and international crafts and food.

The Heart and Hands Latino Festival is the other major festival in Plymouth, IN., held the third Saturday of June in Centennial Park’s Young’s Amphitheater. The Latino Festival runs from 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM. The festival began in June 2001 and continues to grow each year, attracting over 6000 people to the one day event. Festival goers taste authentic Latin American foods while listening to a variety of bands. The children's area is a popular attraction, as well as artisan booths, a silent auction, and community businesses. The festival is the brainchild of the Heart and Hands, Inc. organization in Plymouth, an organization that for several years has been providing services to the Hispanic community and has also built bridges with the community at large by offering Spanish classes, diversity training, and many other programs. By joining hands with the Plymouth Park and Recreation Department they have been successful in reaching their goals of embracing their multi-cultural communities through the arts.

The first Yellow River Festival was held June 2, 2007 and will be held the first Saturday in June, annually. The Yellow River Festival is themed around Native American and early pioneer history of the area and includes period music, dress, food and crafts related to the early settling of Plymouth. The festival takes place along the Yellow River in a lovely shaded setting 2 blocks East of Michigan Street on LaPorte Street in downtown Plymouth. The site is across LaPorte Street from the Farmer's Market.

History

Fall 1977 - Plymouth High School wins Football State Championship

March, 1982 - Scott Skiles leads Plymouth High School to the boys basketball state championship with a 75-74 double overtime victory over Gary Roosevelt High School.

July, 1982 - Five firefighters were killed when their fire truck overturned while responding to a call. The truck crashed on a curve near West School on state road 17. They were driving a tanker truck. When they made the turn, the water in the truck shifted which caused the truck to break through a road barrier. In a later investigation, the call that was placed in which the firefighters were dispatched was found to have been made as a prank by local teenagers.

1996 through 2004, 2005, and 2007 school years - Plymouth High School speech team wins the State Speech Championship for Class "AA" in Indiana.

March 24, 2007 Plymouth wins the Indiana Class AAA boys' basketball championship. Plymouth beat Evansville Bosse in a 72-61 victory. Plymouth lost the title game in 2005 to Washington in a last second halfcourt 3-point shot by Luke Zeller.

June 2007 - June 2008 In June of 2007, Nicole Elizabeth Rash, a 2003 Plymouth High School graduate, became the first representative from the city of Plymouth to become Miss Indiana. She represented her University, as Miss Ball State, being the first Miss BSU in its 50 year history to win at the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant. She then went on to the Miss America pageant, hoping to become the first Miss Indiana to be crowned Miss America, and came very close with a 1st runner-up finish in the 2008 pageant on the nationally televised show, live from Las Vegas, on the TLC network on January 26th, 2008. She is the first Miss Indiana to finish that well since Barbara (Mougin) Ellen in 1978. Barbara was also from Marshall County and was Miss Plymouth when she was crowned Miss Indiana 1977.

2008 Plymouth girls' basketball wins the state championship for the very first time.
