Katafygio Nafpaktias (Greek language: Καταφύγιο, meaning shelter, lodge) is a village in the prefecture of Aetolia-Acarnania in Greece. It is built amphitheatrically in Eastern foot terms Makryoro Mountain, which is naked and particularly scabrous, in altitude of 650 metres. It borders north on Anavriti village, north-eastward on Kentriki and Aspria villages, southeaster ward on Chrysovo village, north-westerly on the Gavros village and southwest on Anthofyto village. It abstains 33 kilometres from Nafpaktos and the access it becomes with turnpike via the way Nafpaκtos - Anthofyto - Gavros - Golemi and the imposing rocks of Amorani.

The village is surrounded by 2 hills in utmost which they are found the small churches St Konstantinos and St Athanasius . The ground of settlement is separated in 4 departments from 4 streams that are linked under the village. Also it is characterized for his declivity and it is frail in subsidence. In 1878 were disappeared 25 buildings because subsidence of ground. The houses and the fields are strengthened regionally with low walls (demata) so that are achieved the withholding of ground. In the centre of village exists the square with the 2 coffeehouses and the holy temple of Koimiseos of Theotokou . In the village exist 2 sports ground, playground while in the top of village in the place Desi exists traditional hostel and at the same time is constructed another one in the place Saint Dimitrios.

The natural environment constitutes itself a sight. It deserves you cross the gorge of Foniorema, you visit the old mills, the caverns but also the 2 old traditionally bridges which are found in very graphic localities.

History

The old name of village was Amorani and in 1928 was renamed in Katafygio (Katafigio). The new name of village emanated from the make that at the Ottoman domination the region existed real shelter. The abundance of caverns, rocky and steep the region rendered exceptionally inaccessible. Historical it is not ascertained when it was founded, sure however it exists as constituted village round 1550 - 1575 therefore also we find it registered in Turkish tax document on the region of Kravara.

At the period of Ottoman domination it constituted one from the large villages of the region, while rocky and inaccessible territory existed real shelter for the enslaved Greeks. Round 1700 two families of cattle-breeders changed residence in the western side of mountain Makryoro and created a small settlement, named Golemi. This historical relation renders Golemi integral department of Katafygio (Katafigio). Administratively Katafygio (Katafigio) village from 1836 until 1912 belongs in the municipality of Apodotia . With the royal decree in the 31/08/1912 261/Α/1912 was recognized as community of Amorani. In community of Katafygio (Katafigio) was renamed with the decree of 09/09/1927 of official Journal of the Hellenic republic 206/A/1927.In the community belongs also the settlement Golemi.

With the application of law Kapodistria it constitutes henceforth the Municipal District of Katafygio (Katafigio) in the Municipality of Apodotia in Aetolia-Acarnania,Greece and it occupies extent 23.429 stremmata ( measure of area, 1 stremma = 1000 sq meters ) while in the census of 1991 were recorded 340 individuals make it as one of more live villages of mountainous Nafpaktia area. Historical the residents deal with the livestock-farming maintaining important number of animals, activity which maintain until today the remaining residents.
